Headline Your Post With an Excerpt

Use the power of creative composition to entice visitors to want to read more by adding custom excerpts to your blog content. Xidipity’s cleverly designed excerpt is easy to use and provides opportunities to entice readers with compelling content.

An excerpt is defined as a short extract from a body of text. In WordPress, the excerpt is the text which shows on the front page as a summary of each blog post. The length is around twenty five words and the last character is the “…”.

If left to its own devices WordPress will create the excerpt by grabbing from the blog content and sanitizing out formatting tags like “bold”, “italics”, “header”, and “lists”. Although this is the easy solution, the outcome may not be the desired result.

To drive this point home I created the following two use cases. The first demonstrates how WordPress creates the excerpt from the blog content and the second demonstrates using the Xidipity tool.

WordPress respond’s to Competition

Changes are coming

WordPress is beginning to feel some pressure from competing sites such as Wix, Weebly, Medium, Ghost and Squarespace. As a result they will be updating, modernizing, and changing the core environment with the introduction of a new block editor named Gutenberg.

For those who prefer the current editing solution or use a custom editing solution tightly integrated into their environment, a rebranded TinyMCE editor will also be included named the classic editor.

Automattic promises the changes will make your words, pictures, and layout look as good on the screen as they do in your imagination, without having to code.

The issue with the first use case is the header “Changes are coming“. WordPress simply stripped the header tags and placed the text in the content. The result is an incomplete sentence. To be honest, the rule is still in place and the tool will not allow for things like “bold”, “italics”, “header”, and “lists” but by separating it from the blog content the post can be whatever it needs to be.

Design Notes

The excerpt container is only visible in the editor. For the tool to work, the container must be placed at the very top of the document.

 Installation

  1. Place cursor at the beginning of the document
  2. Click the Excerpt ( chat_bubble_outline ) icon from the editor toolbar
  3. Replace the text “Place excerpt here …” with the desired content

The excerpt can be edited after the container has been added at any time and it is not necessary to count the words as WordPress will clip the content to fit.

new_releases If you are using a SEO package like Yoast, your excerpt may have a lot in common with the SEO description.
